The words people actually use
Black streaks. Black streaking. That black stuff. Dark sections down one side of the roof. Almost nobody calls it by a technical name, and there's no reason they should. What matters is what it is and whether it's doing something to the roof.
The short version: it's a living organism growing on the surface. The technical name is gloeocapsa magma, and that's the last time it appears in this post, because knowing the name doesn't change anything about what to do. What matters more is that it's growth sitting on top of the roof, not the roof material itself deteriorating.
Why it looks like streaks specifically
The pattern is the giveaway. It runs downward in vertical streaks because that's the direction water moves across a roof, carrying the growth down the slope with it as it spreads. It tends to start near the top and work down. That's not how wear and age present themselves, which is worth holding onto, because it's the basis for telling the two apart.
Why one side is always worse
This is the question that comes up constantly, and the answer is simple: moisture. The slope that gets the least direct sun stays damp the longest after every rain, and dampness is what this growth needs. North-facing slopes go first almost every time. So does anything shaded by a tree, a two-story section of the house, or a neighbor's roofline.
It's not that one side of your roof is weaker than the other. It's the same roof, same age, same material. One side just dries out faster than the other, so the growth gets a much better foothold on the slow side.
Algae or damage: how to actually tell
Here's the money question, and there's a reasonable way to read it from the ground without anyone getting on a ladder.
Growth shows up in patches and follows shade. It's dark where it's damp and clean where it isn't, so the roof looks like two different roofs depending on which slope you're standing in front of. That patchiness, tracking with sun exposure, is the signature of something growing on the surface.
Age and wear show up evenly. The whole roof has been the same age and taken the same weather for the same number of years, so when a roof is genuinely worn, it tends to look tired all over rather than concentrated on the shaded side. A roof that looks uniformly faded and thin, front and back, sunny side and shaded side alike, is telling you something different from one that's dark on the north slope and clean on the south.
That's a way of reading the pattern, not a roof inspection. If what you're seeing looks like more than growth, that's a question for a roofer, not for a cleaning company. He cleans roofs. He doesn't inspect them and doesn't claim to.
Is it doing damage while it sits there?
The honest answer is that this business isn't in a position to make claims about what growth does to a roof's condition or lifespan over time. That's outside what a cleaner measures, and anyone giving you a confident number on it is guessing.

What doesn't work
Waiting for it to weather off on its own. It won't, because it's alive and the conditions that grew it are still there.
Getting up there yourself to scrub it. That's how people get hurt, and shingle in particular doesn't respond well to being worked on directly.
Blasting it with pressure. Force knocks the top layer off and leaves what's underneath to grow back, so the roof looks better for a few weeks and then doesn't. It also strips the granules that protect a shingle roof, which is a real cost for a temporary result.
