What the Black Streaks Actually Are
The streaking on Florida roofs is a living growth, mostly algae, with mold and mildew alongside it in the shaded spots. It feeds on the roof surface and holds moisture against it. Heat and humidity keep it fed, which is why it starts on the north side and the shaded runs first, then spreads.

Why We Never Blast a Roof

Dilution Is the Solution

Both, always. The shaded slope goes first because it stays damp longest, but the growth is already working on the sunny side even where you can't see it yet. Cleaning one slope also leaves you with a two tone roof, which looks stranger from the street than the streaking did. It's one job and one price for the whole roof.
Should we have it cleaned before we head north or once we are back?
Depends what you want to look at. A clean in spring means the house looks right all summer for the neighbors and whoever checks on it, but the growth gets the whole wet season to start again.
